Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Hokkaido?+
Hokkaido has four dramatically different seasons. Winter (December–March) for world-class skiing and snow festivals. Spring (May–June) for cherry blossoms (2–4 weeks later than Honshu). Summer (July–August) for lavender fields and wildflowers. Autumn (September–October) for spectacular foliage. All seasons are excellent.
How do I get to Hokkaido from Tokyo?+
The fastest option is the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (4 hours, ¥22,690, JR Pass covered). Flights from Haneda or Narita to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo) take 90 minutes and are often cheaper and faster overall. Internal Hokkaido connections are by JR train or domestic flight.
Is Niseko the best skiing in Japan?+
Niseko is consistently ranked among the world's top 10 ski resorts for powder snow quality. Hokkaido receives 15+ meters of powder annually due to its cold continental winds. Hakuba in Nagano is the main alternative, excellent for variety of terrain and easier access from Tokyo.
What food is Hokkaido famous for?+
Hokkaido is Japan's finest food region: miso butter corn ramen (Sapporo), hairy crab and sea urchin (seafood markets), fresh dairy products including cheese and soft cream (milk soft serve), lamb BBQ (jingisukan), and premium wagyu from Tokachi cattle. Hokkaido ingredients supply Japan's finest restaurants.
Can I visit Hokkaido on a Japan Rail Pass?+
Yes — the JR Pass covers the Hokkaido Shinkansen and all JR Hokkaido lines. However, Hokkaido is large and train coverage of rural areas is limited. A rental car significantly expands access to Furano flower fields, Biei, Shiretoko, and other rural destinations.
