Frequently Asked Questions

Is the JR Pass worth it in 2025?+
The JR Pass is worth it if your Shinkansen travel exceeds the pass cost. A round-trip Tokyo–Kyoto costs about ¥28,000 ($190). The 7-day pass costs ¥50,000 ($340), so you need at least one more long-distance trip to break even. It pays off best for multi-city trips covering Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka.
Where is the best place to buy a JR Pass?+
Buy before arriving in Japan — online through Klook or the official JR website. Since October 2023 you can also purchase at select JR offices inside Japan, but the overseas price is lower. Klook often offers discounted prices and instant e-ticket delivery.
How much does the JR Pass cost in 2025?+
7-day Ordinary ¥50,000 (~$340) · 14-day Ordinary ¥80,000 (~$545) · 21-day Ordinary ¥100,000 (~$680). Green Car (first class) versions cost roughly 30–40% more.
Does the JR Pass cover the Shinkansen?+
Yes, the JR Pass covers most Shinkansen lines including the Tokaido (Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka), Sanyo (Osaka–Hiroshima–Fukuoka), and Tohoku (Tokyo–Sendai–Aomori). The Nozomi and Mizuho fastest services are excluded — use Hikari or Sakura trains instead.
Can I use the JR Pass on the Tokyo metro and subways?+
No. The JR Pass does not cover Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Osaka Metro, or Kyoto City Bus. It covers JR-operated lines such as the JR Yamanote Line in Tokyo. For non-JR transit, load a Suica or ICOCA card.
When should I NOT buy a JR Pass?+
Skip the JR Pass if you are staying in only one city, taking only one Shinkansen trip, or traveling mostly by budget flights or buses. For a 3-day Tokyo-only trip, a Suica card is far more cost-effective.
What is the difference between Ordinary and Green Car JR Pass?+
The Ordinary pass covers regular reserved and unreserved Shinkansen seats. The Green Car adds access to first-class carriages with wider seats and more legroom. For most travelers the Ordinary pass is sufficient.
