Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Nara from Osaka or Kyoto?+
From Osaka: Kintetsu Namba to Kintetsu-Nara (40 min, ¥750) is the fastest route. From Kyoto: Kintetsu Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara (45 min, ¥750). JR trains also run from both cities but arrive at JR Nara Station, a 20-minute walk from Todai-ji.
Are the Nara deer dangerous?+
Generally gentle, but they can headbutt or nip if they smell food in your bags. Keep senbei crackers hidden until ready to feed, and supervise children. During rutting season (October) male deer are more aggressive. Female deer with fawns in spring require respectful distance.
How much time do I need in Nara?+
Half a day covers Nara Park, Todai-ji, and Kasuga Shrine. A full day adds Naramachi, Nigatsu-do Hall, and a leisurely lunch. Nara is most satisfying as a full-day trip — morning is best before tour groups arrive at Todai-ji around 10:00 AM.
What is the entrance fee for Todai-ji?+
Todai-ji main hall (Daibutsuden) costs ¥600 for adults, ¥300 for children. The Nara Park grounds and deer interaction are completely free. Kasuga Grand Shrine outer grounds are free; inner precincts cost ¥500. Total budget for main sites: ¥1,500–¥2,000.
What food should I try in Nara?+
Kakinoha-zushi (mackerel or salmon sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves) is Nara's most distinctive dish. Miwa somen (thin white noodles from a 2,000-year tradition), yomogi mochi (mugwort rice cake), and kaki (Japanese persimmon) sweets are also local specialties.
