Over 1,200 wild sika deer roam freely through Nara Park, bowing to receive deer crackers from visitors. Depart Kyoto Station on Kintetsu Limited Express to Kintetsu-Nara Station (45 min)
Arrive — walk 5 min to Nara Park; buy deer crackers (shika senbei, ¥200) from vendors
Meet the deer — they bow when they want crackers; early morning is least crowded
Todai-ji Temple (¥1,000) — the Great South Gate with giant Nio guardians, then the Main Hall with the 15m Daibutsu bronze Buddha. Try squeezing through the wooden pillar hole (said to grant enlightenment)
Lunch in Naramachi or near Kintetsu Station — try kakinoha-zushi (persimmon-leaf sushi) or miwa somen (thin wheat noodles)
Kasuga Grand Shrine (¥500 for treasure hall) — walk the forested paths lined with 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns lit twice yearly
Nigatsu-do Hall — hillside terrace with panoramic views over Nara Park (free)
Isui-en Garden (¥1,200) — a serene Meiji-era strolling garden with borrowed scenery of Todai-ji's Great Hall
