Japan's first flower of the new year, ume (plum) blooms before cherry blossoms in shades of white, pale pink, and deep red. The fragrance is stronger and sweeter than sakura. Plum groves have been celebrated since the Nara period (8th century).

Cascading clusters of purple, white, pink, and yellow blooms hanging from trellises — wisteria (fuji) is one of Japan's most dramatic flowers. Shrines have cultivated fuji for over 1,000 years, and dedicated wisteria gardens draw visitors from across Asia.

Hydrangea (ajisai) bloom during Japan's rainy season and transform temple gardens into seas of blue, purple, pink, and white. The moisture of the tsuyu (rainy season) intensifies their vibrant colors. Kamakura's temples are particularly famous for ajisai viewing.

Koyo (autumn foliage) is Japan's second-biggest flower viewing tradition after cherry blossoms. Maple (momiji), ginkgo (icho), and zelkova trees paint mountains and temple grounds in reds, oranges, and golds. The season progresses south from Hokkaido (late September) to Kyushu (late November–December).

💡 The Japan Meteorological Corporation publishes annual koyo forecasts from September. Popular spots in Kyoto and Nikko get extremely crowded on peak weekends — visit on weekdays or early morning (before 9am).
