For Seto Inland Sea islands (Naoshima, Teshima): a JR Pass covers the Shinkansen to Okayama or Takamatsu, but the local train to Uno Port and the ferry itself are not covered. For Okinawa: JR Pass does not apply — Okinawa has no JR trains, and domestic flights (LCC or full-service) are not JR Pass eligible. Buy ferry and flight tickets separately. The JR Pass is most valuable for mainland Japan Shinkansen travel, not island access.
The Kerama Islands are Japan's top snorkeling destination for non-divers. Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island has coral reefs accessible directly from the shore in 1–2 meters of water. Sea turtles are commonly spotted at Nishibama Beach on Aka Island. Equipment rental is available on both islands (¥1,500–3,000/day). No boat needed — just wade in from the beach.
