Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク) is Japan's longest national holiday period — a cluster of four national holidays in late April and early May that gives most Japanese workers 7–10 consecutive days off. It is simultaneously the best and most challenging time to visit Japan: the country is alive with festivals, events, and energy, but also packed with domestic travelers booking out hotels months in advance. Showa Day (昭和の日)
Celebrates the birthday of Emperor Showa (Hirohito) and reflects on Japan's turbulent Showa era. Named Showa Day since 2007; previously celebrated as Greenery Day.
Constitution Day (憲法記念日)
Marks the promulgation of Japan's postwar constitution in 1947. Some prefectures hold public events and exhibitions about democracy and governance.
Greenery Day (みどりの日)
Celebrates nature and the environment — originally linked to Emperor Showa's love of plants. Parks hold free admission events; many botanical gardens have special displays.
Children's Day (こどもの日)
Part of the ancient Tango no Sekku (Boys' Festival). Families fly koinobori (carp streamers) from rooftops to wish their children health and strength. Traditional sweets like kashiwa mochi are enjoyed.
Tip: April 30 (Showa Day substitute) and May 2 (sandwiched between holidays) are often taken as informal days off by companies, extending the holiday to 9–10 consecutive days.
