The most visited single modern art museum in the world — 10 million square feet of immersive digital art where visitors walk through, interact with, and become part of the art. The 2024 reopening at Azabudai Hills doubled the original size. Exhibitions include the Forest of Lamps (infinite mirrors and hanging lights), the Athletic Forest (interactive climbing and sliding), and constantly evolving digital waterfalls. Studio Ghibli's enchanted museum is one of Japan's most sought-after tickets. Designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, the museum is a living extension of his films — a spiral staircase leads to a rooftop garden with the Laputa robot soldier, a real Cat Bus awaits children in the basement, and original storyboards and animation cells fill every display case. An exclusive 15-minute short film (different each month) is shown in the small Saturni Theatre — this film is unavailable anywhere else. Tickets: ¥1,000 adults; book 3+ months in advance via Lawson.
Japan's only UNESCO World Heritage Site museum, designed by Le Corbusier (1959) and designated in 2016 as part of the "Architectural Work of Le Corbusier" inscription. The permanent collection spans from medieval European painting through the Impressionist era: works by Monet, Rodin (outdoor sculptures), Rubens, El Greco, and over 60 other artists. The Matsukata Collection at its core is one of Europe's finest collections of 20th-century French art held outside France. Admission: ¥500 adults. Closed Mondays.
Built above the ancient ruins of Naniwa Palace, the Osaka Museum of History offers floor-to-ceiling windows with views directly into the excavated 7th-century palace ruins — one of Japan's most unusual museum settings. The 10th floor begins a chronological journey from ancient Naniwa through merchant-era Edo period Osaka to modern reconstruction. Scale models of Osaka Castle and the Dotonbori canal in their historic forms are exhibition highlights. Admission: ¥600 adults. Open 9:30–17:00. Closed Tuesdays.
The Heisei Chishinkan wing (designed by Taniguchi Yoshio, the architect of MoMA New York) opened in 2014 and is itself a masterpiece of modern architecture surrounding a reflecting pool. The permanent collection of 13,000+ objects focuses on ancient Buddhist art, tea ceremony utensils, lacquerware, and textiles — many objects normally kept in Kyoto's temples appear here in exhibition. Special exhibitions run year-round. Permanent collection admission: ¥700 adults. The Meiji Kotokan (1895 Meiji-era building) is a National Treasure in itself.
The Ueno area concentrates more museums per square mile than any other neighborhood in Japan. Within a 15-minute walk: Tokyo National Museum (¥1,000), National Museum of Western Art (¥500), National Museum of Nature and Science (¥630), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts (varies by exhibition), Ueno Zoo (¥600). The Ueno Park walking path between museums is free and lined with sakura trees (cherry blossoms) in late March. Combine museums with a ramen lunch in the nearby Ueno Ameyoko street market.

National Museum of Nature and Science (Ueno, Tokyo): the most comprehensive science museum in Japan. National Science Museum Osaka: Osaka Museum of Natural History, and the World Cocoon Museum in Tondabayashi cover natural history with a Kansai focus. Smaller Tokyo art museums worth visiting: 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT (Midtown Tokyo, ¥1,200) — Issey Miyake and Tadao Ando collaboration for design exhibitions. Nezu Museum (Aoyama, ¥1,300) — world-class collection of East Asian art, beautiful garden. Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Shinagawa, ¥1,100) — Meiji-era mansion turned contemporary art space. Outside Tokyo: Adachi Museum of Art (Shimane) — ranked Japan's most beautiful garden by Western garden magazines for 20 consecutive years. Bags: large backpacks must be checked at the coin locker or cloakroom (usually free). Food: no eating inside galleries. Talking: Japan's museums are quieter than Western equivalents — lower voices. Special exhibitions often have separate ticketing and timed entry; wait in the designated queue. Wheelchair access: all national museums are fully accessible. Ueno for museum density: Tokyo National Museum + National Museum of Western Art + lunch at Ameyoko market in one day. Or Mitaka for Ghibli Museum (if you have tickets) + Inokashira Park + Kichijoji shopping. The Hakone Open-Air Museum (2 hours from Tokyo) is exceptional for outdoor sculptures against mountain scenery.
The Ghibli Museum is the top choice for children (Cat Bus room for kids under 12, short films, whimsical architecture). Miraikan (Odaiba) has robots, a hands-on science floor, and the DOME theater. teamLab Borderless's Athletic Forest floor is specifically designed for children. National Museum of Nature and Science has whale skeletons and dinosaur exhibits that captivate children. Most national museums have children's entry fees of ¥0–300.
