Aizu-Wakamatsu Guide

From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama (about 80 min, ¥8,310 unreserved) then transfer to the Banetsu Nishi Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu (80 min, ¥1,170) — total about 3 hours and ¥10,000. From Sendai, take a bus via Bandai Azuma Skyline or the Shinkansen to Koriyama and then the same connection. The Tobu Railway also offers a scenic route from Asakusa to Kinugawa Onsen and then by Wild View Aizu connecting to Aizu-Wakamatsu (about 4 hours from Asakusa). An Aizu Area Pass (¥2,730, 3 days) covers the local buses and trains within Aizu.

The Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps) were a unit of teenage samurai aged 16–17 from the Aizu domain, formed in the last days of the Boshin War (1868) as the new Meiji government forces advanced on Aizu-Wakamatsu. A group of 20 retreated to Mount Iimori after a battle; seeing smoke above the city and believing Tsurugajo Castle had fallen, 19 performed ritual suicide (only one survived). The castle had not actually fallen — it held out for a month more. The Byakkotai Memorial on Mount Iimori is a sobering pilgrimage site, with the white-robed statues overlooking the distant castle. Italy gifted a stone column from ancient Rome in their honor in 1928.

Ouchi-juku (大内宿) is a remarkably preserved Edo-period post town 40 minutes south of Aizu-Wakamatsu by car — a 500m main street lined with some 30 thatched farmhouses that served as inns and shops on the old Aizu Nishi Kaido road between Aizu and Nikko. Today the thatch-roofed buildings house restaurants and craft shops; the most famous experience is eating negi soba — buckwheat noodles eaten with a whole leek instead of chopsticks. Public transport access is limited (one bus from Aizu-Wakamatsu per day); most visitors come by car or rental car. Ouchi-juku is a protected Important Preservation District for Historic Buildings.

Aizu is a celebrated sake-producing region — Miyaizumi, Suehiro, and Kitajima breweries offer tours and tastings, and the region's cold, pure Bandai mountain water creates distinctive clean-flavored sake. Negi soba (leek-chopstick soba at Ouchi-juku) is the signature food experience. Kozuyu is Aizu's traditional simmered vegetable and dried scallop soup served at formal dinners and ryokan. Sauce katsu-don (deep-fried pork cutlet in sweet sauce over rice, without egg) is Aizu's distinctive take on katsudon, different from versions elsewhere in Japan. Wappa meshi (rice steamed in a wooden container with seasonal toppings) is another local specialty.

Aizu-Wakamatsu makes an excellent 2-night base for western Fukushima. From the city, Ouchi-juku (40 min by car) and the Tadami River Valley (90 min, dramatic bridges over emerald gorges) are day-trip worthy. Bandai-Asahi National Park — including Lake Hibara, the Five-Colored Lakes (Goshikinuma), and Bandai Plateau — is 30–45 minutes north by car and offers outstanding hiking and autumn foliage. Higashiyama Onsen (2km from the city center) adds a traditional hot spring experience. The Aizu region in Fukushima is distinct from the coast and the central Fukushima area affected by the 2011 nuclear incident and is safe for tourism.
