Is a guide necessary to see the Amami Rabbit?
Guides are not legally required, but strongly recommended. Licensed guides know the active territories, use red-filtered torches to protect the rabbits' night vision, and can legally enter forest roads closed to independent visitors. Most tourists who go alone see nothing.
Can I visit Amami Oshima on a day trip from Okinawa or Kagoshima?
Possible but very limiting. The flight from Kagoshima is 55 minutes and daily, but the island is large enough that a day trip only scratches the surface. A minimum of 3 nights is recommended to experience the forest, ocean, and culture meaningfully.
What is the best month to visit Amami Oshima?
November and December offer the ideal combination: the rainy season and typhoons have passed, sea turtles have finished nesting, the Amami Rabbit is very active, and crowds are thin. April and May are excellent for wildflowers and clear water before the summer crowds arrive.
Is Amami Oshima suitable for families with young children?
Yes. The mangrove kayak tours accept children from age 5, Ohama Beach has lifeguards and calm water in summer, and keihan is a child-friendly dish. Night wildlife tours typically require children to be quiet and patient — factor this in for very young kids.
