What Is Jidai Matsuri?

Jidai Matsuri (時代祭, Festival of the Ages) is held annually on October 22 to commemorate the founding of Heian-kyo (Kyoto) in 794 CE. First held in 1895 to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the city's founding, it has grown into one of the three great festivals of Kyoto alongside Gion Matsuri (July) and Aoi Matsuri (May).

The festival consists of a massive historical procession (gyoretsu) of over 2,000 participants dressed in period-accurate costumes representing 12 different historical eras of Kyoto's history, from the Meiji Restoration (1868) back through the Heian period (794–1185). The procession spans 4.5km from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Heian Jingu Shrine and takes approximately 3–4 hours to pass.

The Historical Procession

The procession travels in reverse chronological order — beginning with the Meiji era and moving backward through history to the Enryaku era of the late 8th century. Each era group is led by a mounted historical figure and includes foot soldiers, court ladies, samurai retinues, craftspeople, and musicians in extraordinarily accurate reproductions of period costume:

How to Watch Jidai Matsuri

The procession begins at Kyoto Imperial Palace at approximately 12:00 and arrives at Heian Jingu at around 15:30–16:00. You can watch from various points along the route:

Kyoto Imperial Palace (Start)

Free

The procession departs from the Imperial Palace grounds at 12:00. Spectator areas around the palace are free. The start allows you to see all groups with maximum space before the street narrows. Arrive by 11:00 for a good position.

Oike-dori & Kawaramachi-dori

Reserved Seating

Reserved bleacher seats along the route cost ¥2,000–¥4,000 and sell out well in advance. These offer the best sight lines without jostling for position among standing crowds. Tickets available through JTB and major travel agencies from September.

Heian Jingu Shrine (End)

Atmospheric

The procession arrives at Heian Jingu from around 15:30. Watching the groups enter through the massive torii gate and across the shrine bridge is one of the most visually dramatic moments of the festival. The shrine grounds have free viewing areas; arrive by 14:30 for a good position near the gate.

Free standing areas exist throughout the route but fill early.

How is Jidai Matsuri different from Gion Matsuri?▼

Gion Matsuri (July) centers on massive wooden yamaboko floats parading through the streets — a festival of engineering and commerce dating to 869 CE. Jidai Matsuri is a historical costumed pageant rather than a religious parade — its purpose is cultural commemoration of Kyoto's history rather than religious propitiation. Gion Matsuri is larger and more internationally known; Jidai Matsuri has a more intimate, educational character.
