Sagano Scenic Railway (Torokko Train) Guide

The heart of the Torokko experience is the dramatic Hozukyo Gorge itself — a narrow, forested river canyon carved by the Oi River (Hozu-gawa) through the Tamba Highlands west of Kyoto. The open-air wooden cars pass over trestle bridges, through short tunnels, and along cliff edges mere meters from the rushing river below. The gorge walls rise steeply on both sides, covered in maples that ignite in brilliant red and orange during mid-November. Spring brings mountain cherry blossoms and fresh green canopy. Right-hand seats face the river on the outbound Saga-to-Kameoka journey — a tip worth remembering when boarding.

The eastern terminus and main starting point of the Sagano Scenic Railway is a beautifully restored wooden station designed to evoke the feel of a European Alpine railway from the Meiji-Taisho era. Located directly adjacent to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station on the San-in Main Line, it is the most convenient access point for visitors coming from central Kyoto. The station building itself is a photogenic subject, with potted flowers, vintage lanterns, and period-appropriate signage. A small gift shop sells Torokko-branded souvenirs and limited-edition items exclusive to the railway.

Adjacent to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station (30 min from Kyoto Station on the JR Sagano Line, ¥240). Ticket counter opens before the first departure. Coin lockers available. Nearby: Sagano Bamboo Grove (8 min walk), Tenryuji Temple (10 min walk).

The western terminus at Kameoka-Torokko Station is the gateway to the Hozugawa River Boat (保津川下り) — a 2-hour boat ride back down the same gorge from Kameoka to Arashiyama. Skilled boatmen navigate traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats through Class II–III rapids while guiding passengers past the same dramatic cliffs and forested gorge walls seen from the train. The combination of outbound Torokko train (25 min) + Hozugawa boat return (2 hours) is one of the most popular full-day excursions from Kyoto and covers the gorge from two entirely different perspectives.

Hozugawa River Boat: ¥4,100 adult, ¥3,100 child (6–11). Operates March–November, weather permitting. Allow 2.5–3 hours total including boat check-in. Advance booking at hozugawakudari.co.jp strongly recommended for spring and autumn. Boats run from approximately 9am–3:30pm.

The second stop on the railway (traveling from Saga) is located closest to the famous Sagano Bamboo Grove — one of Arashiyama's most iconic sights. The short passageway through towering moso bamboo, with its eerie acoustic of rustling stalks, is a 5-minute walk from this station. The platform at Torokko Arashiyama also has a particularly picturesque view over the gorge and is a good photography stop. Note that trains make only a brief stop here — passengers wishing to disembark at this station should select it as their destination when booking.

Brief stop — confirm your destination ticket is for Torokko Arashiyama if planning to alight here. Bamboo Grove 5 min walk. Tenryuji Temple UNESCO garden 8 min walk. Togetsukyo Bridge (iconic Arashiyama view) 15 min walk. Monkey Park Iwatayama nearby for families.

No visit to Arashiyama is complete without walking the Sagano Bamboo Grove — a dense tunnel of towering moso bamboo stalks lining the path between Tenryuji Temple and Okochi Sanso Villa. Recognized by the Japanese government as one of Japan's Top 100 Soundscapes, the bamboo creates a distinctive rustling sound as wind passes through the canopy. The grove is most atmospheric in early morning before crowds arrive and in afternoon light when sun filters through the green columns. As part of combining with the Torokko experience, the bamboo grove is a natural 30-minute addition after alighting at Torokko Arashiyama Station.

Open at all times, free to enter. Crowds peak 10am–3pm. Arrive before 8am for crowd-free photos. Length of main path approximately 400m. Rickshaw rides available from local operators (¥3,000–¥8,000 per person for Arashiyama circuit). Most atmospheric in morning light and during autumn foliage.
