When is the best time to visit Kyoto and Nara?
Spring (late March to early May) for cherry blossoms and autumn (mid-November to early December) for fall foliage are the most popular and scenic times. Summer can be very humid but festivals are plentiful. Winter is quieter and snow on temple rooftops is magical.
Are the deer in Nara safe to interact with?
Nara's deer are wild but accustomed to humans. They are generally gentle, especially when you offer them shika senbei (deer crackers) sold at nearby vendors. However, deer can headbutt or bite if they think you are hiding food, so keep bags closed and stay aware of your surroundings.
