Arrival at Hiroshima Airport or Station & Transfer to City Center Hotel
Arrive at Hiroshima Airport (40 minutes south of the city by airport bus) or Hiroshima Shinkansen Station, and transfer to your hotel in the Naka-ku city center area near Peace Memorial Park.
Kaki-Chazuke Hiroshima Oyster Rice Congee Morning Set
Start your Hiroshima morning with kaki-chazuke — a nourishing bowl of plump grilled or simmered Hiroshima oysters (kaki) placed over rice and doused with hot dashi green tea broth. Light, savory, and intensely umami, this dish reflects Hiroshima's status as Japan's top oyster-producing prefecture.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Dome Walk
Walk through the expansive Peace Memorial Park on the banks of the Motoyasu River, visiting the Children's Peace Monument with its towering origami crane offerings, the Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims, the Flame of Peace (burning until all nuclear weapons are abolished), and the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome — the skeletal remains of the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, preserved exactly as the blast left it and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
One of Japan's most important and moving museums. The East Building documents the historical context of the atomic bombing; the West Building displays personal belongings, photographs, and testimonies from survivors (hibakusha). The exhibits — a charred lunchbox, a child's tricycle, melted glass bottles — convey the human scale of the destruction in an unforgettable way.
Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki at Okonomi-mura Multi-Story Building
Head to Okonomi-mura ('okonomiyaki village'), a multi-story building in Naka-ku housing over 25 individual teppan griddle stalls, each with a unique recipe for Hiroshima-style layered okonomiyaki. Watch the skilled cook build the dish in layers — thin crepe, heaped cabbage, pork, bean sprouts, soba noodles, fried egg — before flipping and pressing it flat with wooden spatulas.
Hiroshima Castle Outer Grounds & Moat Walk (Tower Under Renovation)
The Hiroshima Castle grounds, stone walls, and moat remain freely accessible while the main tower is permanently closed since March 22, 2026 due to seismic-safety concerns — a rebuild is still under study with no reopening date set. Walk the moat path, admire the restored stone foundations, and visit the Ninomaru Turrets (free entry). The grounds offer a peaceful oasis and good views of the castle silhouette against the city skyline.
Shukkeien Garden Afternoon Walk
Shukkeien ('shrunken scenery garden') is a classic stroll garden built in 1620, featuring miniaturized landscapes of mountains and streams around a central pond. The garden was severely damaged in 1945 and painstakingly restored. Autumn maple foliage (November) and spring irises (May–June) make it particularly beautiful.
Grilled Hiroshima Oysters and Local Sake at Hondori Izakaya
Celebrate your first evening in Hiroshima with a plate of charcoal-grilled Hiroshima kaki (oysters) — plump, briny, and smoky — alongside cold local Sakurao or Kamotsuru sake. Hiroshima Prefecture produces over 60% of Japan's farmed oysters; fresh from the bay, they are some of the finest in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get from Hiroshima to Miyajima Island?
Take the JR Sanyo Line or Hiroshima Electric Railway (tram line 2) from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station (25–30 minutes). From the pier adjacent to the station, two ferry companies cross to Miyajima in 10 minutes: the JR Miyajima Ferry (¥200 one way, covered by JR Pass) and the Matsudai Kisen private ferry (¥200 one way, not covered by JR Pass). Both operate frequently from around 06:30. Round-trip ferry costs ¥400 per person if paying cash. The first combined journey from a central Hiroshima hotel to Miyajima takes about 45–60 minutes total.
What time should I visit the floating torii gate to see it at its best?
The torii gate appears to float when the tide is at or near high tide — it's fully surrounded by water for about two to three hours either side of the tide peak. At low tide you can walk across the sand to touch the base of the gate, which is also a unique experience many visitors enjoy. Check the Japan Meteorological Agency tide table (www.jma.go.jp) for Hiroshima Bay before your visit and match your arrival time to the high-tide window. Arriving on the first ferry before 07:00 gives you empty shrine paths and golden dawn light regardless of tide. The most dramatic floating effect typically looks best about one hour before high tide peak.
What is the difference between Hiroshima-style and Osaka-style okonomiyaki?
Osaka okonomiyaki mixes all ingredients (cabbage, pork, egg, flour batter) together and cooks them as a single thick pancake. Hiroshima okonomiyaki is completely different: it is built in layers on a teppan griddle — a thin crepe base, a mountain of raw cabbage, pork slices, and bean sprouts are stacked on top, then a portion of yakisoba noodles is added, and finally a fried egg caps the whole tower before it is flipped and pressed flat. Hiroshima okonomiyaki is taller, crispier, and more complex. The result is chewier from the noodles and crunchier from the egg and cabbage. Neither is 'authentic' — they are distinct regional traditions, both equally valid. You can try both styles at the Okonomi-mura building in Hiroshima's Naka Ward, which has floors of okonomiyaki stalls.
Is hiking Mt Misen worth it during a short 2-day Miyajima trip?
Yes — the summit views from Mt Misen (535m) across the Seto Inland Sea are exceptional and genuinely different from anything visible at sea level on Miyajima. Take the Miyajima Ropeway (¥2,000 round trip) from Momijidani Station — two separate gondola segments drop you at Shishiiwa Observatory at 433m. From there a 30-minute hike through a forested trail leads to the 535m summit with 360-degree views stretching to Hiroshima city and dozens of island. Budget 1.5–2 hours for the full ropeway and summit hike experience. The ropeway usually closes for maintenance in late January and February. On very windy days the gondola may temporarily suspend service.
What is anago meshi and where should I eat it on Miyajima?
Anago meshi is Miyajima Island's signature dish: simmered conger eel (anago) glazed with a sweet-savory tare sauce and laid over a wooden box of seasoned rice. The flavor is more delicate and lighter than the freshwater unagi eel served elsewhere in Japan. The most famous purveyor is Ueno Restaurant, located about 5 minutes' walk from the ferry pier toward Itsukushima Shrine; they have been serving anago meshi in wooden bento boxes since 1901. Queues form by 11:30am on busy days. The bento set costs around ¥2,500–¥3,000. Alternatively, several other restaurants near the Omotesando shopping street also serve excellent anago meshi for slightly less.
Can I pet the deer on Miyajima Island?
Miyajima's deer are wild Sika deer that have lived freely on the island for centuries. They are not tame despite their apparent boldness around tourists. Touching or feeding them is officially prohibited — feeding disrupts their nutrition and encourages aggressive behavior. The deer will attempt to eat paper, maps, onigiri wrappers, and bags if you are not careful. Keep food sealed in bags and hold your belongings close. Observing and photographing them from arm's length is perfectly fine and they rarely react with aggression if not surprised or cornered. If a deer approaches you, simply step aside calmly.
What is the best time to visit Miyajima to avoid crowds?
Miyajima is one of Japan's most popular day-trip destinations and gets very busy from 10am to 4pm on weekends and holidays. To experience the floating torii and Itsukushima Shrine in near-solitude, catch the first ferry at around 06:30 — the island before 08:00 on weekdays is extraordinarily peaceful. Cherry blossoms bloom in late March to early April around the shrine approach, creating spectacular but crowded conditions. Grilled oysters are at their best from October to February when Hiroshima Bay oysters are fat and sweet. Autumn foliage (mid-November) on Mt Misen is the other peak beauty season. Avoid Golden Week (late April–early May) and Obon (mid-August) for the most comfortable experience. See accommodation at /stay/hiroshima to position yourself well.
When should I book hotels for this 2-day Hiroshima trip?
For Hiroshima, we recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks in advance for regular travel periods, and 6–8 weeks ahead during peak seasons (cherry blossom in March–April, Golden Week in late April–May, and autumn leaves in October–November). This itinerary is calibrated for budget accommodation (¥3,000–8,000/night), which is widely available in Hiroshima — but the best properties at this price point book out quickly.
