Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Arashiyama bamboo grove?+
Early morning (before 8:00 AM) is the only time the bamboo grove is truly quiet — by 9:00 AM it fills rapidly. Early November for autumn foliage and late March for cherry blossoms are the most beautiful seasons, but also the most crowded.
Is the bamboo grove accessible by public transport?+
Yes — take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station (17 min). The bamboo grove is a 5-minute walk from the station. Alternatively, the Randen tram (Keifuku Electric Railway) runs from Shijo-Omiya in central Kyoto to Arashiyama in 20 minutes.
What is a jinrikisha (rickshaw) ride?+
A jinrikisha (rickshaw) is a traditional Japanese two-wheeled vehicle pulled by a kimono-clad runner (shafu). A 15–20 minute rickshaw ride through the bamboo grove and around the Arashiyama district costs approximately ¥3,000–¥5,000 per couple. The shafu provides commentary and suggests the best photo angles.
Is Tenryu-ji garden worth visiting?+
Absolutely — Tenryu-ji's Sogenchi garden is one of Japan's finest garden designs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site created by legendary garden master Muso Soseki in 1339. The central pond reflects the seasonal garden and Arashiyama mountain backdrop. Allow 30–45 minutes.
Are there food options in Arashiyama?+
Yes — Arashiyama's shopping street (Saga Toriimoto and Togetsukyo area) has many restaurants and cafes. Try yudofu (tofu hotpot), matcha ice cream, warabi mochi (bracken starch jelly), and Arashiyama's seasonal bamboo shoot dishes in spring.
