Rishiri Island Guide

The main gateway is Wakkanai, Japan's northernmost city. From Wakkanai Port, Heartland Ferry runs to Oshidomari port on Rishiri in approximately 1 hour 40 minutes (¥3,010 one-way for second class). There are 1–3 sailings daily depending on season. Wakkanai is reached by JR Soya Line from Sapporo in about 5 hours (¥8,910), or by ANA/JAL flight from Sapporo Chitose Airport to Wakkanai Airport (45 minutes, ¥15,000–25,000). Rishiri Airport receives direct flights from Sapporo (45 min) on seasonal ANA routes (May–October). The island has no public bus system; rental bikes and scooters from port rental shops (available at Oshidomari) are the standard transport. Rental cars are occasionally available from local operators.

Mount Rishiri (1,721m) is a serious alpine hike rated as difficult — not for beginners. The main trail from Oshidomari starts near the campsite and gains 1,350m in about 4.5km. Total time for fit hikers: 5–6 hours up, 4–5 hours down. The upper section involves loose volcanic rock, some scrambling on fixed ropes, and can have snow patches through July. Weather on Rishiri changes rapidly — conditions can go from sunny to cloud and rain within an hour. Recommended gear: hiking boots (not trail runners), rain jacket, warm layers, headlamp, trekking poles, and 2+ liters of water. No water sources on the route. The summit rewards with views of Hokkaido's north coast, Rebun Island, and on clear days, Russia's Sakhalin island. Guided hikes are available from local operators. Start by 5am for best summit conditions.

June through September is the main visiting season. Sea urchin is freshest June–August. Alpine flowers peak on the mountain in July–August (on the slopes at 600–1,000m elevation). Cycling is best May–October. Hiking the summit is possible June–early October; above 1,000m is snowfree July–September. The island's population (about 4,500) swells in summer with nature travelers from Japan and abroad. September and October offer autumn colors and fewer crowds. Winter (November–April) is very harsh — ferries may be suspended during storms, the island is essentially in isolation; not recommended for tourists. The kombu seaweed harvest in July–August is a major local event and the kelp-drying racks visible on roadsides are a distinctive Rishiri sight.

Rishiri kombu (利尻昆布) is considered Japan's finest dashi kombu — the large brown kelp harvested from the cold waters around Rishiri Island from August–September. Its dashi (stock) produces a clear, light-colored broth prized in Kyoto cuisine for its delicate, umami-rich flavor. Rishiri kombu makes up only about 3% of Japan's total kombu harvest but commands the highest prices (¥5,000–15,000/kg for top-grade dried strips). The kelp grows 5–7 meters long in the shallow offshore waters and is hand-harvested by fishermen on small boats using long poles. The island's fishing families dry and sort the kombu on gravel beaches and rooftop racks. Visiting the harbors in August lets you watch the drying process and buy direct from processors. Packaged Rishiri kombu is available at island shops and Sapporo department stores.
